DAER RELEASES AMPHIBIOUS SOLVER

Open-source DNS solver now available to the research community
The Department of Aerospace Science and Technologies (DAER) at Politecnico di Milano is excited to announce the official open-source release of AMPHIBIOUS, a high-performance computational fluid dynamics solver designed for simulating complex flows.
What is AMPHIBIOUS?
AMPHIBIOUS is a direct numerical simulation (DNS) solver for time-resolved simulations of incompressible flows that handles geometries of any complexity: from simple analytical shapes to intricate 3D anatomies. Built on a state-of-the-art immersed boundary method, it delivers accuracy and exceptional computational efficiency on both CPUs and GPUs.
A journey from research to release
The release of AMPHIBIOUS is the outcome of years of dedicated research. The underlying methodology was published in the Journal of Computational Physics in July, followed by presentations at major scientific conferences starting with the EUROMECH 2025 Fluid Dynamics Conference in Dublin. After months of refinement and testing, AMPHIBIOUS was released as open-source software on November 15, 2025, with version 1.01 now available.
Built for researchers
The solver provides a complete and streamlined computational workflow through three integrated modules: preprocessing for mesh generation and preparation, the main solver for time integration and statistics, and postprocessing for visualization and analysis. The entire simulation process is controlled through a single input file; tutorial examples are included to help users get started immediately.
A collaborative achievement
AMPHIBIOUS originates from a long-term collaboration between Emeritus Prof. Paolo Luchini (Università di Salerno), Dr Ing Davide Gatti (Karlsruhe Institute of Techology) and several people at DAER, among which the key developers PhD student Andrea Portioli and Dr Marco Atzori, coordinated by Professor Maurizio Quadrio.
