FROM HARDWARE-IN-THE-LOOP TO IN-ORBIT VERIFICATION AND TESTING OF CUBESAT ADCS ALGORITHMS

PhDAER Seminar Tuesday, June 18, 2024

  • 10:00-12:00 - Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Aerospaziali, Politecnico di Milano, Sala Consiglio DAER, Second Floor, Building B12, Campus Bovisa, Via La Masa, 34, Milano
  • 15:00-17:00 - Classroom L.07, Building B12, Campus Bovisa, Via La Masa, 34, Milano

Seminar in the context of the PhD Course "Advanced Simulation and Testing of GNC Algorithms" dealing with hardware-in-the-loop and in-orbit verification and testing of Cubesat GNC algorithms.

The seminar will present the spacecraft GNC design, verification and testing activities performed at the University College of Dublin (UCD), with focus on the development of EIRSAT-1, Ireland's first satellite. I

In the second part of the seminar, the in-orbit testing experience and the lessons learnt from EIRSAT-1 spacecraft operations will be discussed with the students.

Speaker:

Dr. Joseph Thompson is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, University College Dublin and a member of the UCD Centre for Space Research (C-Space).
He completed his PhD in 2020 in the modelling and control of flexible (vibrating) systems, in particular using a technique called wave-based control. He has applied this technique to modelling and attitude control of both launch vehicles (rockets) and spacecraft considering both structural flexibility and on-board fuel sloshing.
Since 2017 he has been the Chief Engineer for EIRSAT-1, a 2U CubeSat and Ireland's first satellite, which was launched in December 2023. During the project he designed and built a testbed at UCD which was used for the system level verification of the EIRSAT-1 ADCS.
His other research interests include space system modelling and simulation, CubeSat constellations and swarms, spacecraft optical communication, model-based design, hardware-in-the-loop simulation and CubeSat structures and mechanisms.
