SHAPE AND TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION FOR HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT IN THERMO-FLUIDS SYSTEMS

Heat transfer enhancement is a key fundamental technology for improving efficiencies and performances of various thermo-fluids devices.

In most real systems, the coupling of conduction, convection and radiation needs to be taken into account, and this makes the optimal design of heat transfer surfaces quite challenging.

In this presentation, recent progresses of shape and topology optimization techniques for enhancing heat transfer will be reported. Furthermore, we will also introduce our recent attempts to experimentally validate the heat transfer performances of the obtained optimal shapes fabricated by the additive manufacturing technology.

Yosuke Hasegawa received Ph.D. degree on modeling of mass transfer across turbulent air-water interfaces in 2004 from Dept. Mech. Eng., The University of Tokyo.
After spending two-year postdoc at TU Darmstadt in Germany, he was appointed as a PI at Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo in 2013.
Since then, he has been leading his laboratory and working on various optimization problems in thermo-fluids engineering such as shape and topology optimization of heat transfer surfaces, estimation of velocity and thermal fields based on limited measurements, remodeling mechanisms of vascular network in biological systems, and coating and printing of complex fluids in industrial processes.
From 2018 to 2020, he was also a visiting scholar at Brown University in US.
