CHIARA BISAGNI, KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT THE ASC CONFERENCE

11 September 2023 — 1 minutes read

Chiara Bisagni will give an invited keynote at the American Society for Composites (ASC) 38th Annual Technical Conference ↗ on September 17-20, 2023 in Greater Boston, Massachusetts.

The title of her lecture is "Bending, Buckling, Never Breaking: New Challenges for Design, Analysis, and Testing of Aerospace Composite Structures".

Abstract:

The ongoing research and the new challenges related to the design, analysis, and testing of aerospace composite structures will be presented, where buckling is considered no more as a phenomenon to be avoided, but as a need for introducing innovative solutions for a significant weight reduction. Design methodologies, that includes an integrated computational-experimental approach, are under development to study the interaction between the skin-stringer separation and the post-buckling deformation for multi-stringer panels made by thermoplastic and thermoset composite materials. The research activities include a building block approach, the analysis and testing of multi-stringer panels as well as single-stringer specimens, and the investigation of the failure modes. The developed design methodologies have the potential to reduce the overall development cost, contributing to an increased role of modelling and simulationfor aerospace composite structures from the preliminary design to the certification.

Short Bio:

Professor Bisagni received her Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in Italy, where she became Assistant and later Associate Professor. Then, she was Full Professor at the University of California San Diego in the US, before moving to Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, where she was professor from 2015 to end of March of this year. She is now Professor at the Politecnico di Milano, Department of Aerospace Science and Technology, keeping a guest Professor position at Delft University of Technology. Her research regards aerospace composite structures. Her projects span from buckling, post-buckling, and crashworthiness, to fatigue, damage tolerance and optimization, for aeronautical and space applications. Professor Bisagni has received funding from European Clean Sky program, H2020, US Air Force, ONR, collaborates with Airbus, Boeing, Fokker and NASA, and she just obtained an ERC Advanced Grant, NABUCCO. Professor Bisagni received several awards, including an Amelia Earhart Fellowship, a Marie Curie Grant from the European Commission, a Young Researcher Fellowship from MIT, and a Fulbright Grant. She is Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Knight of the Order of Star of Italy.
