DUAL-USE TECHNOLOGIES

08 February 2024 — 1 minutes read

PhDAER Seminar
Thursday, February 8, 2024 at 4 pm - Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Aerospaziali, Politecnico di Milano, Sala Consiglio DAER, Second Floor, Campus Bovisa, Via La Masa, 34, Milano (MI)

In his talk, Professor Nolen Gertz will present various ethical issues surrounding the problem known as "dual-use" concerning technological design and engineering.

In order to investigate these issues, we will first turn to postphenomenology in order to better understand the nature of human-technology relations and what specifically arises in these relations such that the problem of "dual-use" can occur.

We will then turn to natural law theory in order to understand attempts to address the similar problem known as "double effect", as first identified by the medieval theological Saint Thomas Aquinas.

This will lead us to just war theory, where political philosopher Michael Walzer has attempted to bring the concerns of Aquinas to the modern era, which will finally help us to see how these insights can be brought to bear on contemporary concerns surrounding "dual-use" technologies.
