MANAGING COMPLEXITY IN PERFORMANCE-CRITICAL ENGINEERING: A CROSS-INDUSTRY SYSTEMS ENGINEERING PERSPECTIVE

PhDAER Seminar
November 7, 2025, from 16:15-17:45 - Sala Consiglio DAER, Building B12, 2nd Floor, Politecnico di Milano, Campus Bovisa, Via la Masa 34, Milano

Developing complex systems in today's fast-paced engineering environments requires not only deep technical knowledge in the disciplines. It demands a system level approach where the organization seamlessly integrates different functional areas, often with seemingly conflicting requirements and timings, to deliver optimal performance.
We will explore the challenges of development and integration, exploring where traditional functional approaches struggle to meet the demands. We will introduce Model Based System Engineering and Agile practices. We will discuss how to manage complexity and uncertainty and why also in engineering collaboration is key to success of projects.
Speaker:
Lucia Conconi is a Politecnico di Milano aerospace engineering alumna with over 20 years in high-performance motorsport, including 15+ years of technical leadership in Formula 1 with teams in the UK like Mercedes, Brawn GP, and Renault. As Head of Vehicle Performance at Sauber Motorsport Formula 1, she led multidisciplinary teams integrating vehicle dynamics, advanced simulation, modelling, software, data analytics, and advanced testing under time and performance pressure. Now consulting on innovation, performance optimization, and organizational transformation, she shares insights on managing complex multidisciplinary technical challenges.
