VTOL EVOLUTIONS AND PROPULSION SYSTEMS

PhDAER Seminar

April 22, 2026, from 4pm till 6pm, Sala Consiglio DAER, Building B12, 2nd Floor, Politecnico di Milano, Campus Bovisa, Via la Masa 34, Milano

Understand the evolution of recent light manned VTOLs by use of simple models of power needs and possible propulsion systems (thermal, hybrid, electrical) using alternate energy sources to fossile fuels (batteries, fuel cell, etc.) Join online here.

Speaker

Christian Mercier: Former chief engineer "innovative power solutions" research Airbus Helicopters 2008-2020.

He graduated from École Centrale de Paris and IFPen schools of engineering.

Passionate for aeronautics he is qualified on 20 types of airplanes, seaplanes and helicopters and issued 10 patents. A common thread in his work is the optimal efficiency of the propulsion unit. By the direct injection Diesel engine in automotive industry and light helicopters, by the electrification, demonstrated in first flights worldwide and presented in conferences.

His teaching activities led him in Germany to Technical University Dresden and in France at IFPen as well as Ensam-Paristech on the theme “VTOL powerplants and engines”.

Free admission, open to all members of the university community and the public, subject to availability.
