Descrizione della ricerca e sue ricadute

The objective of AWETRAIN is to train 12 ESRs on how Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) can be integrated into the industrial energy system. Disruptive innovation like this is needed to fulfill the goals of the Green Deal, Fit for 55, the revised RES Directive and the Offshore Energy Strategy. AWE can access wind resources where conventional technologies cannot, thus, can help fill gaps in renewable energy generation. Furthermore, it has the potential to cut the capital cost of wind energy by half, while doubling the production capacity. The intersectoral training will develop the skills needed in the energy industry to facilitate the green transition. The skills developed in this network can be transferable to industrializing any emerging technology. For the institutes, the ambitious research and training, implemented though international collaboration, will greatly enhance their own training innovation capacities.

Contributi principali DAER

  • DAER will work on the Wind Farm Optimization and Operation of AWE systems. From a scientific and industrial point of view, in fact, operating multiple AWEs together as a plant is crucial to generate grid scale power. Furthermore, maximizing the density (aircraft per unit area) is important for achieving high land-use efficiency and lower plant costs. However, there are several challenges and opportunities that will be explored. For example, plant level control regulation strategies are needed to avoid collisions. An important factor is the turbulence, changes in wind direction and wake interaction effects that can impact both path deviations and power production. This project will investigate how the combination of plant siting optimization and plant regulation strategies can be leveraged to achieve optimized configurations, over a range of densities.
  • DAER will also organize the training activities as part of the AWETRAIN project
